  One Way Charges Within South Africa

A one way fee of R 300-00 will apply on any one-way rental when a vehicle is picked up and dropped off at different locations in South Africa with the exception of:

  • Rentals from Johannesburg to Pretoria and vice versa
  • Collection and delivery takes place in the same city

On Rentals from Johannesburg to Durban area a fee of R500 will apply. Specifically to:

On Rentals from Johannesburg to Natal area a fee of R500 will apply.

On Rentals from the following Avis location terminating in Cape Town, a R500-00 One way fee will apply, as follows:

  • Umtata to Cape Town
  • Queenstown to Cape Town
  • East London to Cape Town
  • Grahamstown to Cape Town
  • Port Elizabeth to Cape Town
  • Plettenburg Bay to Cape Town
  • Knysna to Cape Town

On One Way rentals between Durban and Richard' s Bay (vice versa) a fee of R150,00 will apply.

  Driver's Licence

Renters must be in possession of a valid driver's licence. The following conditions apply:

  • The minimum age for rental is 21 years, when payment is been made by an accepted credit card. Driver's licence must have been valid for a minimum period of 3 years.
  • 25 years when payment is by cash, driver's licence must have been valid for a minimum period of 5 years.
  • Renters who are under the age of 21 and are in possession of a valid drivers licence will be permitted to rent a vehicle subject to a young drivers surcharge of R50 per day
  • The renter and additional driver must have been in possession of a driver's licence for a minimum of 3 years.

  Direct Payments

The following deposits/payments will be collected at the time of Rental:

Delivery/Collection charges
While kilometers are always taken from Avis station, we meet our customers personally at airports, railway stations or elsewhere. A nominal collection and delivery fee will be applied in the case of this service being required.

  • R100-00 - Within office hours
  • R200-00 - Outside office hours on weekends and public holidays.

These fees apply to all deliveries and collections in South Africa within a 25km radius of an Avis location. Thereafter on quotation for distances greater than 25km, R4.00 per km.

  Petrol/Fuel Deposit

This is not included in our rates. Cars are delivered full and the customer is charged for full refill upon termination of rental.

  • R500 deposit to cover the actual fuel charges.

  Rental Contract Fee

R20 contract fee which will be payable by the client at the rental desk. This is an administration fee to cover admin costs and will apply to each and every rental.

  Additional Driver Fee

All drivers must be listed on the applicable rental agreement. There is a charge of R100 per additional driver, per rental. If an unlisted driver is involved in an accident, or theft of the vehicle, the renter will be liable for full damage/replacement costs. There is no maximum number of additional drivers.

The renter and additional driver must have been in possession of a driver's licence for a minimum of 3 years.

  Young Driver's Surcharge

A levy of R50 per day will be charged to rental agreements where the driver is under 21 years of age.

  No Show Fee

A charge of R250 will apply to the tour operator for rentals where the reserved car does not get collected by the client without a prior cancellation of 48 Hours.

  Traffic Fine Handling Fee

A charge of R150 will apply as an administration fee, over and above the fine that needs to be paid.

  Accident Claim Handling Fee

A charge of R350 will apply as an administration fee, over and above the excess that needs to be paid.

72 hour advance reservation essential for this service.
Paraplegic hand controls are available (for certain models only, starting at Car Group "E") at no cost in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Skukuza and Pretoria. Vehicle must be returned to one of the above stations.

  • Baby seats and booster seats are also available from most branches at R100 per rental. Please specify which is needed at time of reservation in Remarks.

    A once off fee of R1,000 will be applicable to cross border rentals into Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Additional over border insurances charges will still be apply as tabled below.

    • D/E/O = R 200 per day
    • N = R 210 per day
    • Minimum insurance charge of 5 days will be levied as per the above

    Insurance / Excess for over border
    Please note the rentals originating in the Republic of South Africa and driven into Namibia and Botswana, conditions of CDW and TLW of these countries will apply.

    Example : if the client has purchased Super Cover waiver in South Africa therefore responsible for an excess of R4,000 once he enters Namibia or Botswana the excess applicable will be N$7,500 and if the client has purchased Standard cover in South Africa with the excess of R11 000 once he enters Namibia or Botswana the excess applicable will be N$25,000.

      Over Border Procedures

    • A letter of authority for cross border rentals must be requested by the customer at the time of rental. If this is not obtained, Avis cannot be held responsible if the customer is refused entry.
    • Vehicles may be taken into Zimbabwe and Mozambique under the following circumstances.
    • Prior application is made 72 hours in advance and dates of entry into and exit from Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
    • If vehicles are taken into Zimbabwe or Mozambique without prior notice and payment of the additional insurance, customers will be liable for the full costs of any accident / claims.
    • Vehicles for use in Zimbabwe and Mozambique may only be rented from Johannesburg and must be returned to Johannesburg.
    • One-way rentals are only allowed with prior approval of the renting station.
    • In addition to the CDW/TLW included in the rates, a further vehicle insurance charge will apply which must be paid directly to Avis by the customer.

    Under no circumstances may stipulated vehicles for Cross Border Rentals be termed or abandoned in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

      Over Border Breakdown

    Should you require a breakdown or repair service while travelling in Zimbabwe, Namibia or Mozambique, assistance will be rendered as quickly as possible. However, due to distances, delays in response may be experienced.

      Over Border Road Tax / Toll Fees

    The below road tax / toll fees are paid by the client directly at the appropriate border :

    Namibia - All vehicles entering Namibia are subject to an N$70-00 road tax. This is payable in CASH – Namibia Dollars to Namibian officials when crossing the border.

    Zimbabwe - The fees charged by Zimbabwean Authorities at the Beitbridge border post are as follows:

    • Toll fee: ZWD 800 (can be paid in US$ or South African Rand as well, converted at bank rates). This toll is payable on entry to Zimbabwe and on exit from Zimbabwe. This amount is based on a "light passenger" vehicle – the amount increases in a trailer of any type is being towed *including boats, caravans etc).
    • Temporary 3rd Party Insurance cover - ZWD 780
    • Stamp Duty - ZWD 39
    • Agency Fee - ZWD 250
    • (Total of ZWD 821.50)
    • Carbon Tax - this is based on engine capacity, fuel type etc but ranges between ZWD 100 and ZWD 400. Currently, all amounts can be paid in CASH (Traveler's Cheques are not accepted) - Zimbabwe Dollars, US Dollars or South African Rand (the latter 2 would be a conversion of the Zimbabwe Dollar amount at the current bank exchange rate).

    Non Waiverable Excess Liability

      Terms of Payment

    A cash deposit as determined by Avis will be requested at the time of rental and final adjustments are made upon termination. Only bank guaranteed cheques are accepted. Avis recognized charge cards such as American Express , Diners Club, Visa and MasterCard may be used to waiver the cash deposit.

    Rates
    Rates are applicable only when pre-reserved and pre-paid to an Avis appointed Tour Operator. Such Tour Operator must hold an Avis Billing Account and be in possession of Avis vouchers. Should you require to establish a billing account please contact your nearest Avis office.

    Refunds
    The number of rental days reflected on any specific voucher will be billed to the Tour Operator, irrespective of whether the renter curtails the rental before the termination date. A cancellation fee equivalent to one day's rental charges will be levied on all refund applications. Refunds must be requested by the Tour Operator and a refund of the days not used will be paid by Avis to your Avis Central Billing Account. There are no cancellation fees if rentals are cancelled before rental date.

    Rates are calculated for the minimum period of 24 hours from the time of pick-up to time of drop-off

    Waivers and Personal Accident Insurance

    Collision Damage Waiver
    For your peace of mind, Avis offers a choice of 2 optional waivers for your protection in the event of accidental damage to the vehicle. These are known as collision damage waiver (CDW/SCDW). Choosing standard or super cover means that in the event of an accident, the renter is responsible for up to the specified amount as indicated on the rates table for repair to or replacement of the vehicle or part thereof (or the cost of damage repair, whichever is the lowest).

    NOTE: In the event of an accident occurring while the vehicle was not driven by the renter, or other authorised driver as nominated on the rental agreement, the renter will be responsible for the full damage to or loss of the vehicle. The same applies if the vehicle was driven on unsuitable roads, the renter was driving negligently or if no other car, animal or object was involved.

    Theft Loss Waiver
    Avis offers 2 optional Theft Loss Waivers (TLW/STLW). Acceptance of either standard or super cover means that if the vehicle or any part of it is stolen while in your possession, you will be responsible for the replacement up to the specified amount reflected on the rates table.

    NOTE: If the loss or damage occurs or the expenses in question are incurred in the country or territory outside of the Republic of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, then, notwithstanding the provisions of the Rental Agreement. The Renter's liability will be limited to the relevant amount or percentage specified in the rates brochure applicable in such other country or territory which is current at the commencement or the rental period.

    All waivers are subject to Avis standard terms and conditions.

    Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
    The renter who accepts Personal Accident Insurance as well as all other passengers in the vehicle will be covered for accidental bodily injury while driving, riding in, getting into or out of the Avis vehicle. Coverage is in effect up to "return date" indicated on the rental agreement or any Avis approved extension. The insurance will apply to persons up to the age of 75. The death benefit in respect of persons under 15 years of age shall be limited to R 10 000.00. The benefit will be divided equally among all occupants of the insured vehicle.

    NOTE: The insured shall give immediate written or telegraphic notice to Avis of any claim and in any event within 90 days of injury. Avis acts as agent for Accident and Miscellaneous Acceptances , who is the underwriter of the PAI Policy . All benefits in terms of the PAI Policy are subject to the terms and conditions of the underlying policy.

    The purchasing of PAI ensures the following covers

    • Accidental Death & Permanent Disability: We will pay R 200 000.00 per person per incident and limited to R 500 000.00 per Avis vehicle per incident in the event of accidental death or permanent disability.
    • Emergency Medical Expenses: We will pay up to R 250 000.00 per vehicle per incident for emergency medical expenses incurred whilst driving, riding in or getting out of an Avis rented vehicle.
    • Guaranteed Hospital Admission: We will guarantee up to R 5 000.00, which guarantees admission to the hospital. This is refundable by the member or the member's medical aid.
    • Contingent Liability: Up to R 2 500 000.00
    • Contingent Third Party Liability Cover: for the driver of the Avis vehicle in his/her personal capacity
    • Funeral Benefits: Upon the death of the driver of the Avis rented vehicle, we will make the necessary arrangements to return the body to the driver's hometown and will further pay up to R 20 000.00 towards the deceased driver's funeral. What about the passengers
    • Travel Delay Cover: We will pay up to R 2000.00 towards transportation or accommodation should the member be stranded after a mechanical breakdown or after a motor vehicle accident.

      Emergency Medical Assistance

    NOTE: The policy does not cover any loss from intentionally self-inflicted injuries, suicide or any attempt threat, sickness or disease, full time active service in the armed services of any country or declared or undeclared war. This leaflet is for illustration only. Full details are contained in the Master Policy, which will be made available for inspection.

      Trauma Counselling

    Trauma Counselling Service offers a professional telephonic counselling service to the renters who find themselves victims of hi-jacking, car theft, robbery or general accident and motor related trauma. If further counselling is required, we will pay up to R 5 000.00 per annum per beneficiary for a consultation with a therapist, psychiatrist or psychologist.

      Directions Service

    This service allows the driver access to directions throughout South Africa, whether it is a specific street address should they be lost, or whether you require directions for the shortest route to a specific area etc. Claims Assistance24-hour vehicle accident claims procedure and accommodation assistance.

      Insurances - Passenger Liability and Third Party Motor Cover

    Third Party Motor Liability including Passenger Liability: The Avis Rental Agreement indemnifies the renter and any other authorized driver against claims which they become legally liable to pay consequent upon accidental death of or bodily injury or illness or accidental loss of or physical damage to tangible property resulting from the negligence of the renter or authorized driver whilst driving the hired vehicle.

    Total Cover: Total Cover Limit: In excess of R 150 000 000.00 Applies to Avis vehicles registered in South Africa or Namibia travelling in South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It excludes travel to Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Angola unless cover specifically arranged for these territories.

  • In accordance with all South African laws, all Third Party claims are first processed via the Multilateral Motor Vehicle Accident Fund Act 93 of 1989 (MMD which deals with death and injury claims). Should the MMF not fully honor the claims, the Avis Policy should come into effect. The MMF does not deal with property damage claims.
  •   Main Exclusions

    If any of the following circumstances apply at the time of injury or damage to the Third Party or their property, the renter or driver will not be covered by the policy:

    • Unauthorized driver not registered on the Rental Agreement.
    • The rented vehicle was not in roadworthy condition.
    • The renter will also be responsible if the vehicle was driven on unsuitable roads.
    • The driver was under the influence of liquor / drugs.
    • The driver was not holding a valid driver's licence.
    • Carriage of fare paying passengers.
    • Carriage of passengers in excess of the particular vehicle's capacity.
    • Death of or bodily injury to any person in the employment of the renter / driver arising from and in the course of such employment.
    • Death of or bodily injury to a member of the same family / household as the renter / driver (spouse or child)
    • The renter / driver is entitled to indemnity under any other policy.
    • The renter / driver has not been refused motor vehicle insurance by any insurance company / underwriter.
    • The renter / driver will not be covered for any consequential losses or damage or for contractual liability incurred unless such liability would have attached notwithstanding any contractual agreement.
